¹ And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman.² And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it.³ (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)⁴ And the LORD spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out.⁵ And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth.⁶ And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.⁷ My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house.⁸ With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?⁹ And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and he departed.¹⁰ And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous.¹¹ And Aaron said unto Moses, Alas, my lord, I beseech thee, lay not the sin upon us, wherein we have done foolishly, and wherein we have sinned.¹² Let her not be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he cometh out of his mother's womb.¹³ And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, Heal her now, O God, I beseech thee.¹⁴ And the LORD said unto Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that let her be received in again.¹⁵ And Miriam was shut out from the camp seven days: and the people journeyed not till Miriam was brought in again.¹⁶ And afterward the people removed from Hazeroth, and pitched in the wilderness of Paran.

¹ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,² Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.³ And Moses by the commandment of the LORD sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel.⁴ And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.⁵ Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.⁶ Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.⁷ Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.⁸ Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun.⁹ Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.¹⁰ Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.¹¹ Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.¹² Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.¹³ Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.¹⁴ Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.¹⁵ Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.¹⁶ These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.¹⁷ And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:¹⁸ And see the land, what it is, and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many;¹⁹ And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;²⁰ And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.²¹ So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.²² And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)²³ And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.²⁴ The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.²⁵ And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.²⁶ And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.²⁷ And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.²⁸ Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.²⁹ The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.³⁰ And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.³¹ But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.³² And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.³³ And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

¹ Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?² She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.³ She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.⁴ Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.⁵ O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.⁶ Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.⁷ For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.⁸ All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.⁹ They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.¹⁰ Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.¹¹ For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.¹² I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.¹⁴ Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.¹⁵ By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.¹⁶ By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.¹⁷ I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.¹⁸ Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.¹⁹ My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.²⁰ I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:²¹ That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.²² The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.²³ I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.²⁴ When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.²⁵ Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:²⁶ While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.²⁷ When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:²⁸ When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:²⁹ When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:³⁰ Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;³¹ Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.³² Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.³³ Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.³⁴ Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.³⁵ For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.³⁶ But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

¹ Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:² She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.³ She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,⁴ Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,⁵ Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.⁶ Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.⁷ He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.⁸ Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.¹¹ For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.¹² If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.¹³ A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.¹⁴ For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,¹⁵ To call passengers who go right on their ways:¹⁶ Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,¹⁷ Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.¹⁸ But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

¹ Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.² And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.³ Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.⁴ And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.⁵ And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.⁶ And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.⁷ Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.⁸ And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.⁹ And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?¹⁰ And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.¹¹ And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?¹² And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.¹³ And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.¹⁴ And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.¹⁵ And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:¹⁶ For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.¹⁷ And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:¹⁸ For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.¹⁹ And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.²⁰ Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.²¹ But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.²² And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!²³ And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.²⁴ And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.²⁵ And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.²⁶ But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.²⁷ For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.²⁸ Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.²⁹ And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;³⁰ That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.³¹ And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:³² But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.³³ And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.³⁴ And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.³⁵ And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.³⁶ Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.³⁷ For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.³⁸ And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.³⁹ And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.⁴⁰ And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.⁴¹ And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,⁴² Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.⁴³ And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.⁴⁴ And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.⁴⁵ And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,⁴⁶ And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.⁴⁷ And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.⁴⁸ But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?⁴⁹ When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?⁵⁰ And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.⁵¹ And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.⁵² Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?⁵³ When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.⁵⁴ Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.⁵⁵ And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.⁵⁶ But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.⁵⁷ And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.⁵⁸ And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.⁵⁹ And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean.⁶⁰ And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.⁶¹ And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.⁶² And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.⁶³ And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.⁶⁴ And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?⁶⁵ And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.⁶⁶ And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,⁶⁷ Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:⁶⁸ And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.⁶⁹ Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.⁷⁰ Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.⁷¹ And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.
